How to Spot Real Jeans
So what exactly constitutes real jeans? Real jeans are made up of a strong cotton twill fabric called denim that is put through a series of indigo dye baths for a saturated and deep blue color. Real denim jeans can either be categorized as stretch or non stretch. Stretch denim, as you know, has a hint of spandex so they fit in a way that flatters one’s physique. But when jean makers started combing a whole lot of spandex into different fibers, they created a new fabric that mimicked denim. This is how jeggings or denim leggings were invented. When this little fad came out last season, most of them appreared a little odd since it only had an elastic waistband with no zippers, pockets or buttons. Typically, real jeans include five pockets, twelve rivets, contrast stitching, five to seven belt loops and a zip or button fly. Today, designers are finally incorporating these elements to make jeggings (and some leggings) look more like real jeans inside and out (and less odd looking). Although I still favor the real thing—classic jeans that are made with heavyweight indigo denim, I do occasionally wear jeggings… just as long as they still resemble real jeans. Can you spot the real jeans?
