The truth is, we just love to abuse our jeans. Since their invention, jeans have been ripped, bleached, shrunk, permanent pressed, cut off, torn, shredded, distressed, sanded, stone washed, and acid washed. On the other hand, they’ve been lovingly embroidered, beaded, patched, painted and sequined. We definitely have an intriguing relationship with our favorite article of clothing. Through the good times, and the bad ones, our loyal jeans still love us. And we still love them.

Which reminds us, in the 1970’s, during the height of the free love movement, the US also saw an outpouring of denim love. Americans were using their jeans to visually express their hopes, political views, and religious beliefs. In 1974, Levi’s held a denim art contest and received thousands of entries.

The worst part (or best part!) is that people actually wore these jeans. That’s right, take a look at these bad boys below . . .

If you ask Croatia, they’ll direct you to their capital city of Zagreb, where the organizers of the Cockta Jeans Fabric Project have stitched together 8,023 pairs of donated jeans to create one giant custom jean with a 148 foot rise. That’s right - this pair of jeans is spread about 112 feet wide and is the size of about six tennis courts.

Why, you ask? Don’t worry, it was for a good cause! The project donated over $10,000 (seven kunas - or $1.30 - per donated pair of jeans) to a local charity which provides therapy to disabled people.

So, now that we know what the people in Croatia do with their old jeans (or just when they’re bored), we’re curious, what do you do with yours?

Now there’s a man who knew how to wear holes! Here at indi we plan to introduce heavy distressing options for our customers and I think we can all learn a bit from Henry VIII’s fashion sense. (I would not, however, recommend following his marital advice.)

So, this brings up the question—when wearing holey jeans, what style would you like to channel? British royalty or British punk bands? Counter culture or haute couture? Grandeur or grunge? These days, the choice is up to you!

Today we are taking some of the final steps to launch our new Spanish and Japanese denims. We’ve tested out the fabrics (see Marybeth in her Japanese fits below), perfected the washes, and are just about to set them up for web. Now, all that’s left is for the engineering powers that be to do their thing, and you, too, will be able to design your own Spanish and Japanese jeans.

For all of you who aren’t familiar with what makes Japanese and Spanish denim worth the trans-atlantic/trans-pacific journey, you’ll just have to check out my forthcoming blog entry. But because I’m a big fan of teasers, here is a brief description (along with a picture) of our new denims designed to whet any jean connoisseur’s appetite. 

Turning Japanese?

Japanese denim, perhaps the most coveted of all denims, is actually spun on vintage American shuttle looms that were purchased by the Japanese after WWII. Traditional production techniques and smaller looms mean this denim is far more labor intensive to create, but the Japanese, for whom the phrase “bigger is better” doesn’t really resonate, saw a business opportunity and snatched up the looms faster than the Americans could say, “wait, how much will that vintage looking denim sell for in the 21st century?”

European fabric, in general, is known for quality, style and, of course, pride and pretentiousness. So when we were selecting our Spanish fabric, we wanted to make sure it was as loud and proud as possible. Accordingly, we chose a denim with a fine yet bold crosshatch—think sophistication, with an edge.

Other premium denim companies do not necessarily prioritize the task of picking the right pockets.  Once you find a fit you like, you just have to live with whatever comes attached to the butt.  At the price your paying for premium jeans, though, this is almost as crazy as buying a new car with someone else’s obscene bumper stickers permanently attached. Whether you like it or not, your jean pockets are constantly sending out subliminal (and not-so-subliminal) messages behind your back.  Luckily, most back pockets for jeans won’t wind you up getting flipped off, but they often do make an equally emotional impact on their viewer.

The more ornate pockets can scream, “Hey, you!  Get over here and buy me a drink!” while the button flap pocket can mutter “What are you looking at?  I’m working from home today.”

Is it the same things that makes butts and legs look sexy?  Is our brain stimulated by clothed legs and, by default, the clothing on the legs?  I guess that harkens back to the adage of old “Is it the man that makes the clothes or the clothes that make the man?”

Well, ladies, in this post we briefly discuss two things: lines and butts.  As you’re reading this, know that you are just a few clicks away from finding out what will make your jeans so… well, sexy!

Lines

The lines of the jean determine the silhouette.  To create a sexy silhouette for your body type, take a deep breath, zen out, strike a yoga pose… Do what you’ve got to do to think BALANCE!

If you’ve got great hips and your girlfriends are always complimenting you on your hot “hour-glass figure,” then choose bootcut or flare to balance the curvature of your hips. 

If you’re long and thin, there are a number of leg openings you can go with that compliment those lengthy lines.  Narrow, straight leg, bootcut, wide leg and flare are all in your repertoire.  Go crazy.

Round and rectangle? Mid-rise bootcut jeans will slenderize and tenderize those lines for a truly sexy look. 

Making your lines pleasing to the eye is dependent upon what you think is sexy on you, so sometimes the best advice is to go with your instincts.  You can only pull off a style if you look and feel comfortable, so make sure you pick a style that YOU feel good in! 

Butts

In our world at indiDenim, we think about pockets - a lot… and it shows.  Seriously, let’s face it.  Butts attract our attention for a reason.  And depending on who you ask, butts are pretty sexy all by themselves, but you can’t just go around mooning people to attract the attention you crave in that direction now can you?

Not unlike shaking your tail feathers, our human nature urges us to embellish, embellish, embellish!  Sexy jeans call for sexy pockets, embroidery or embellishments.
