Basic Definition

Low Rise Jeans sit 1.5-2.5” below belly button, depending on the length of your torso. Low rise jeans can be more comfortable and very sexy without worrying whether or not you’re exposing yourself to the world while bending over.

History

Low cut, hip-huggers, low rides… call them what you want, low rise jeans became popular during the 1960s with the help of rock icons like Jimmy Hendrix. However, during the 1980’s and 1990’s, as more women entered the work force, low rise jeans lost their popularity since many opt for a more professional looking jean. In the early 2000s, with the help of female pops singers like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera,  the fashion of the low-rise jeans once again emerged. Some designers even went further to create the super low rise style.

Low Rise Trivia

In 2004, Louisiana state legislator Derrick Shepherd attempted to outlaw the fashion of low-rise jeans. He wanted people fined $500 if they wore jeans that noticeably displayed their underwear under the pants. Mr. Shepherd called this trend “disrespectful and obscene.” A similar bill was attempted in Virginia, putting a $50 fine on anyone deliberately showing their underwear.

Who knew that such a recent fashion could stir up so much trouble?

Style Advice

Don’t buy a pair of low rise jeans if you have to squeeeeeeze the button shut. Otherwise, you will end up producing the dreaded muffin top effect where the waistband is too low and too tight, causing your tummy to spill over the sides of your jeans.
