Polyester Title
Since polyester is ultimately a man-made fiber and a plastic it can be shaped in anyway depending on its application, here are three common cross section shapes.
Basic Definition
Polyester can be derived from plants or by man-made processes - however because they must be chemically derived in either case they are considered a “synthetic” textile. It is the third most commonly produced plastic material because of its blending properties with other, natural, textiles, especially cotton. It has an improved wrinkle resistance, high durability and good color fastness (the colors don’t run). Therefore when blended with cotton, like a pair of denim jeans, you get the combined softness and hand of the cotton with the improved durability of the polyester.

History
Invented by British scientists working in the laboratories of Calico Printers Association, Ltd. in England and patented in 1941. The patent was purchased by DuPont in the mid-1940’s and after some more research on the fiber, was released on the market in 1951 under the name Dacron.
