Skinny Jeans Title
Basic Definition
Skinny Jeans is a style of jeans that has a snug fit through the legs and end in a small leg opening. British model and style icon Kate Moss is given credit to the explosion of the skinny jean trend when she started wearing them back in 2000.
History
Emerging during the 1950s, the skinny jeans came to symbolize youth and rebellion. Skinny jeans started out worn mostly by males. Actor James Dean popularized slim fitting jeans (not quite like the skinny jeans we know today, but just as rebellious at the time) in the movie Rebel without a cause. Because of their negative connotation, skinny jeans were sometimes banned in theaters, restaurants and schools. The skinny jeans enjoyed a brief revival in the 1980s, only to resurface again in 2006. The look has also been increasingly popular within the emo scene, skater style, and now is becoming a mainstream staple worn by young women (and even men) everywhere.
As the fashion trend grows, more and more students are showing up wearing skinny jeans in schools, which believe it or not is causing some big time controversy. One school district in North Texas (which boasts one of the most conservative dress codes) banned skinny jeans completely for all students. It goes to show that even today, skinny jeans have maintained their rebellious reputation.
Style Advice
Thanks to its versatility, skinny jeans are great when paired with pretty much any type of footwear: flats, heels, boots or booties.
Skinny jeans also look great with form-fitting and looser tops: from motorcycle jackets to loose halter tops. Look for a pir thats fitted but not skintight, in a rise that flatters your shape. A hem that ends just past your ankle gives the sleekest effect.
Skinny Don’ts:
Tip 1: Don’t wear skinny jeans that make you unable to walk. Skinny jeans are supposed to be snug, but not cut off your circulation.
Tip 2: Don’t roll up or cuff your skinny jeans. The beauty of skinny jeans is that they taper through the entire leg beautifully. Don’t try to get fancy and roll them up too high. They will get stuck around your calf and look goofy.
Tip 3: Try getting skinny jeans with stretch fabric. Although you want a slim fit, 100% cotton Denim jeans can often be very uncomfortable (and unflattering). We recommend a skinny jean with some stretch, not too much to make them like jeggings, but certainly enough to give you comfort.
