wiki help Title
Welcome to the DenimWiki! A wiki is a collaborative body of information, created and edited by a community of wiki users who seek to learn and share knowledge (just like Wikipedia). This particular wiki is for everything related to denim, from how denim is made to denim style. We encourage all users to share their knowledge, provide style advice, and share this information with friends using our share buttons. Below you’ll find tips on how to use our wiki.
Wiki Rules
Now we don’t feel like laying out a list of do’s and don’ts, but the rule our mothers told us still rings true:
Treat others as you would like to be treated. Thanks, ma. Steer clear of things like profanity, insults to other users, and plagiarism and you should be just fine.
That said, we want our wiki to be a body of knowledge AND discussion. Constructive criticism, healthy debate, and opinion-driven input are all highly encouraged as long as we are respectful.
While each of our articles are moderated, each user is allowed to add to/edit most of the content on this wiki. Feel free to propose changes and add content where you see fit. Although your text will not appear immediately, our wiki is frequently monitored and your content should appear soon after you’ve submitted it.
Below, you will find more information on how to add/edit entries.
Edit an Article
To edit an article click on the edit link in the upper right hand corner of the page. This puts the article in “edit mode” which lets you edit the content right there on the web page. In Edit mode, simple text formatting such as emphasis, strong emphasis, delete, and insert are handled by BBCode, an easy-to-remember method of styling text. When you are done editing just click on update and your edits are instantly published.
BBCode works by surrounding the text you want to style with a bracketed tag. For all of the following examples, we’ve added spaces in the code in order to show you what it looks like (otherwise instead of seeing the code for something like bold font, you would see text in bold font without knowing how to write the code that creates bold font).
For example, if you want to make some text bold you’d do this.
This text is not bold. [ b ]This text is has stronger emphasis[ /b ]. Without the spaces after the brackets, the text would look like this: This text is has stronger emphasis.
Other shortcuts to the code (remember, delete the spaces after the first brackets!)
[ i]This text is italicized[ /i].
Create an Article
Creating an article in a wiki is as simple as finding something that doesn’t exist. A wiki assumes that whenever someone searches for an article and no results are found or clicks on a link to an article that doesn’t exist, that someone will want to create that information for the community. Sound strange? Let’s use an example of a Cookbook wiki to explain.
A set of breakfast recipes is not complete without an inspired Peanut Butter Sandwich. You have such a recipe. To add this recipe, the first thing you would do is use the Create or Find a Page search tool in the sidebar to see if someone already added a recipe with the same title. You search for Peanut Butter Sandwich. The wiki checks all existing articles and comes up empty. The wiki then gives you the opportunity to create an article titled Peanut Butter Sandwich by clicking the Edit link. Once you click edit, the article is instantly created and you can share your gooey peanut butter masterpiece with the world.
While editing your Peanut Butter Sandwich recipe you remember that nothing goes with such a delicacy better than a mug of your special hot chocolate. The easiest way to create an article for your hot chocolate recipe is to create a link for it using wiki syntax, a markup very similar to BBCode. But instead of using a single bracket, you’ll use double brackets. To create a link for your hot chocolate recipe you’d do something like this (remember, without the space after the first bracket):
A mug of [ [hot chocolate]] goes great with this sandwich.
Which would display this:
A mug of hot chocolate goes great with this sandwich.
When you click the hot chocolate link, the wiki discovers that the article doesn’t exist and then gives you the opportunity to create it by clicking the edit link. Try clicking on the link and you’ll see exactly what we mean. If the hot chocolate article already existed then this method would automatically link to it.
You can do a lot more with Wiki Syntax, please see the Wiki Syntax section for details.
Organizing Articles with Categories
Assigning an article to a category is easily accomplished with wiki syntax. For example, to add your Peanut Butter Sandwich to the sandwiches category you would click on the edit link to enter the article’s edit mode and add the following anywhere in the article (remember, delete the spaces after the first bracket!):
[ [Category:Sandwiches]]
This would automatically assign the article to the Sandwiches category. If the category doesn’t exist, the wiki will create it automatically. To add multiple categories just add an additional category like so (remember, delete the spaces after the first brackets!):
[ [Category:Sandwiches]]
[ [Category:Peanut Butter]]
This would assign the article to the Sandwiches and Peanut Butter categories. And finally, you can add sub-categories. For example, let’s say you want to create a “breakfast” sub-category for the main (also called “parent”) Sandwiches category.
The following would do that (remember, delete the spaces after the first bracket!):
[ [Category:Sandwiches::Breakfast]]
Now the article is assigned to the Sandwiches parent category and the Breakfast sub-category.
Uploading Images
In the toolbox sidebar, click “file upload” and from there you can upload a file from your computer. After you’ve uploaded the image, simply copy the code from the second “Quick Links” box directly below the image (the code that starts with [[Image) and paste that code into the article that you are editing. Don’t forget to paste the image code where you would like it to appear in the article (in relation to the text). You can also find your uploaded images in the toolbox sidebar by clicking “uploaded files” and browsing through our gallery.
Remember: all images added to this wiki must have permission from the owner for their use.
