Basic Definition

Boyfriend Jeans is a fit that corresponds to men’s jeans, but still designed for women. The denim industry coined the term “boyfriend jeans” after it became a prevalent look for young women to raid their boyfriend’s closet and wear their jeans. This look screams, “I am hot enough to rock men’s jeans AND get a man to steal them from!”

History

Also known as the antithesis of the skinny jeans, boyfriend jeans became popular after fashionistas like Katie Holmes and Victoria Beckham were seen wearing them in public. The idea here is simple: to create a cool yet effortless look that interplays masculine and feminine. A number of denim designers have already jumped on the boyfriend bandwagon to incorporate the boyfriend jean into their lines.

This look is meant to be cuffed at the bottom and whether you like the boyfriend jeans or not (or have a boyfriend or not), it’s important to remember that not everyone can pull it off. Andrea Linett , the creative director of Lucky Magazine says that,

“If you are like Gisele Bündchen (tall and slender), then go boyfriend all the way, but most of us can’t do all boyfriend without looking like a hobo.”

Style Advice

So ladies, here’s our advice:

Choose your boyfriend jeans as cautiously as you would your boyfriend or significant other (perhaps more so). You must be careful not to end up looking disheveled and frumpy since the jeans are designed to look two sizes too big. Look for a loose, relaxed cut, with a rise that sits comfortably on hips. They should be long enough for you to cuff.

Tip 1: Because of their streetwise, baggy style boyfriend jeans should get a hit of ladylike elegance; pair it with fitted tops and knits to create a perfect balance and sharp contrast.

Tip 2: Another idea is to simply accessorize a masculine outfit with feminine accessories. For example, don’t just stop with your boyfriend’s jeans…take his tee or collared shirt too! From there accessorize your ‘fit with sunglasses, a leather handbag, or jewelery. We’ve also seen many women roll up their jean cuffs (notice how many celebs do it) to reveal an ultra feminine stiletto heel. A fiercely feminine way to combine masculine and feminine.

Whatever you choose, the cardinal rule is intention: make your boyfriend jean looked planned and elegantly matched, not like you threw on a random pair of jeans and rolled out of bed.
