Stonewash Jeans Title

Basic Definition

Stonewashing is a finishing process in which denim is tumbled with pumice stones in large washing machines to give the fabric a soft hand and a slightly worn look. Super stonewashing can last as long as six hours. Stonewashing allows manufacturers to produce a variety of fabric washes and finishing treatments. Changes in water temperature, the size of the washing machine, the number of stones, the amount of water and time can all change the final result of stonewashed jeans.

History

In the mid-1950s, the introduction of the stone-washing technique by GWG (Great Western Garment Co.) revolutionized the denim and textile industry. In the 1970s, Canadian entrepreneur Donald Freeland essentially pioneered stonewashing. Stonewashed jeans became a sought after,  popular fashion trend in the 1980s.
