Stretch Jeans

Big booties need big bootie jeans.

But before we go any further, let’s give the obligatory shout out to Beyonce, J-LO, and Kim for helping big booty ladies all over love their beautiful behinds. It’s about time that we all celebrated our greatest ass-ett (sorry, I just couldn’t resist the opportunity for that one).

And celebrate we would, if only finding the right pair of jeans to cover your trunk was not one of the most daunting tasks of our earthly lives.

So before embarking upon the search, let’s prepare mentally. This may sound a bit odd, but sometimes you need to think about jeans like you think about a bra—you need a sturdy, supportive pair that can lift and shape your big booty.

Now that we’re in the right mindset, how do we find that perfect big booty jean?

Well, here are some basic tips on how YOU can design your own pair of indiDenim custom jeans to make sure that the marriage between your big booty and your denim does not end in divorce:

* Stretch it out! Ideally, you want to choose stretch denim (jeans with a combination of cotton and spandex) that will stretch to fit your backside. You don’t want to look like you’re about to lead Suzanne Somer’s next workout video, but your jeans should have enough stretch in them to be able to shape—and cover—your voluptuous bottom.

* Dark denim all the way! To optimize your butt, stay away from light-washed jeans because they’ll just make your hips look wider. It’s important to embrace the big booty, but when finding a great pair of jeans, it does not need to be the main event. If you pick a darker wash jean, it will slim your body…and your behind.  Also, be sure to pick a dark pair of jeans with back pockets close to the center. Lower down pockets will just make your big booty look bigger. And please, don’t bedazzle your pockets. Your booty is decoration enough!

* Pick a classic boot cut. If you pick a “regular” pair of jeans—aka not skinny jeans or other denim that’s blatantly styled—it will draw less attention to your rear. Skinny jeans, in general, are a bad choice because they cling to your ankles, and therefore draw attention to your thighs.

* Confidence, sister! Remember, there’s a reason why Sir Mix-A-Lot wrote a whole song dedicated to your back side. Your big booty is to be celebrated, so untie that sweatshirt from around your waist and be proud of what you’ve got. Now, with the perfect fitting pair of big booty jeans, you and Ms. Kardashian over there have absolutely nothing to hide.

Some of you may have noticed that we’ve held it down for the Bay by naming our jean styles after different SF neighborhoods. But now that we’ve paid proper homage to our roots, we’ve come up with something a little different to help us select our fabric names.

This week we are calling out to our customers to think of names for our new denim washes. We’re about to release four new (and beautiful, if we may say so ourselves) washes, and we need your help to name them.

This new denim is a lighter weight stretch denim made in the USA by our favorite American mill, Cone Denim. What is really special about this denim is the way the denim feels and drapes. It is ueber soft and falls just right when you are walking, sitting, standing—whatever. It is a great, versatile denim that can be dressed up or beat up and still look great. And, I’m not going to lie, most of us in the office were wearing this denim today.

So here is where you come in. We are looking for some fun, creative names for these four washes. Since they all come from the same base fabric, they should have names that tie together somehow. So put your thinking caps on and feel free to impress us with your wit and charm. Post your suggestion as a comment on this post. Explanations for your names are not obligatory, but may be awarded extra points by our judges.

And remember, if you have the winning suggestion, we’ll send you a pair of custom jeans in the your favorite new wash.

Getting a pair of stretch denim to fit for their entire lifespan starts with finding stretch denim that fits to begin with. You should look for stretch denim that not only fits your body like a glove, but also has great memory (meaning they stretch and then shrink back to their original form) - something that you will find in all jeans from indi!

Once you've gotten this perfect stretch denim jean (hopefully from indi), the way you wash your jeans is key. Here are a few tricks to help maintain the color, structure and feel of your stretch denim (in order of importance):

1. You should wash your stretch denim as infrequently as possible. In fact, avoid washing your denim at all costs. If you do have to wash...
2. Always turn the jeans inside out.
3. Follow the care label instructions.
4. Wash on the gentle cycle with like colors.
5. If absolutely necessary, tumble dry LOW, but never until the denim is completely dry. Take your stretch jeans out of the dryer when they're still a little damp and lay them flat to dry the rest of the way.

Following these simple steps will ensure that your stretch denim maintains its integrity to the best of its ability.

Stretch jeans appeal to different people for different reasons.  Nowadays, it’s hard to come across a jean that doesn’t have stretch.  Your mom may like a stretch waist band because her waist size varies depending on which “lifestyle” she’s choosing that week and she’d rather die than use one of these, while your little sister seeks out stretch jeans to hug her hips and form fit for that guy in her physics class.

But what is it about certain stretch jeans that cause the household washer and dryer to be visited again and again (less for cleaning purposes as for their ability to shrink denim back down to its original form)?  Ah yes, not long after the introduction of stretch jeans in the eighties, women everywhere discovered the denim cultural phenomenon now not-so-lovingly referred to as butt sag.  Luckily for everyone who has lived through a scenario like this, butt sag is nothing that a mid-day trip to the local coin-op can’t remedy.

Today, in part thanks to denim innovators, ahem ahem, not unlike ourselves, women worry less about sagging and resort less to doing morning yoga sessions in jeans in order to get them to fit their figure.  In fact, our built-in stretch fit factor calculates how much flexibility is going to be needed to get our denim pattern to fit your body just right.  Our special 2% two-way stretch denim keeps its shape and integrity, while maintaining a great feel.

No doubt, there are many more elastic innovations to come in stretch jeans, and indi will be here to make each new stretch fabric fit your figure for good.
